Remix Culture 2.0 : Refining in MeshMixer

During our 'speed dating' session in class, my peers agreed that the 'Hive Mind' concept was the most intriguing from my list of remix ideas. The original idea is below:

They mentioned that the concept was indeed disturbing... but then I received feedback to hollow out the head, add some honeycomb's to the eyes and maybe even incorporate a tree to the head, to act as a kind of stand. I realized that they were just as demented as me and that were we on to something truly frightening.

I took these well conjured ideas, pulled up my sleeves and got to work! Using TinkerCad, I first separated my objects into separate pieces, which I then exported as separate .STL files to use in MeshMixer.

After importing these files into MeshMixer, I resized the objects, added colour and assembled them to create the final piece:

It was fairly easy to reassemble all of the pieces in MeshMixer and the larger lay-out made for a painless workflow.

As per the feedback received, I added honeycomb's to the eyes, placed a tree in the centre of the head and placed some aggressive looking honeybees on the face, on the top of the head and in the air. To complete the composition, a honeycomb was used as the foundation for the structure.

Here are some screenshots of the finished composition:

This is the scariest thing ever, we all can agree on that. It feels like a creation made by Hannibal Lecter... disturbing.

Anyway, my original concept was focused on portraying the connection between humans and the internet - a Hive Mind! The internet has allowed us to connect to one another in so many ways, faster than the blink of an eye. We have created an online community that spans the globe, which is truly remarkable. Stores of information can be obtained from a quick Google search - ideas just buzzing about.

The tree is symbolic of the 'tree of life' which represents personal growth, strength and beauty. The branches are reaching up towards the heavens, always striving for greater and higher knowledge.

In conclusion, this mashup represents the advancement of human beings through technology and the internet. Since everything is stored on the internet, it has become an extension of our consciousness, one that we can easily see and access at will. Thanks to the internet, we can easily make remixes of whatever we want through any media. The internet is probably fundamental to remix culture, as I mixed ideas using TinkerCad (an online program), found my ideas on Thingiverse (a website of shared ideas) and now I am sharing my mashup with you all on Blogger, which is online!

Thanks internet!
